This represents around 8% of total UK trade, based on 2018 figures. But it is clear that new agreements with some countries will not be ready in time. The UK`s trade agreement with Switzerland contains elements of the MRA between the EU and Switzerland. The UK and the EU are negotiating a trade deal that will start on 1 January 2021, when the new relationship between the UK and the EU will begin. While Northern Ireland remains on UK customs territory, it is subject to EU tariffs on goods from the UK when goods are likely to enter the EU. Northern Ireland is also subject to EU tariffs on goods from the UK, some of which are produced within Northern Ireland. In addition, Northern Ireland will be subject to EU subsidy controls. These rules could ultimately apply to subsidies across the UK if the UK government`s support could theoretically affect trade between Northern Ireland and the EU, as decided by the ECJ.
