Bulgaria`s pension scheme is similar to Canada`s pension scheme and covers most of the self-employed in Bulgaria. March 1, 2014 – Ottawa, ON – Canada Employment and Social Development The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Employment and Social Development and Minister of Multiculturalism, announced that the Social Security Agreement between Canada and the Republic of Bulgaria will come into force today, March 1, 2014. This agreement will allow Canada and Bulgaria to better coordinate pension benefits and contributions for people who have lived or worked in both countries. The agreement will coordinate the implementation of Canada`s old age insurance programs and Canada`s pension plan with Bulgaria`s comparable pension plans. You can qualify for a Canadian or Bulgarian performance or both. However, according to the agreement, the benefit paid by each country is exclusively related to your eligible periods under that country`s pension program. In other words, Canada pays an amount that reflects the portion of your time that can be allocated under Canada`s pension program, and Bulgaria pays an amount reflecting the portion of your eligible periods under the Bulgarian pension program. In order to receive a benefit under the Bulgarian pension programme, you must generally have contributed to the programme for at least years. The Social Security Agreement will allow Canada to coordinate the implementation of its Old Age Security and Canada Pension Plans programs with Bulgaria`s comparable pension programs. The agreement benefits Canada: if you are a widower, widower, child or entitled to someone who has contributed to the retirement programs of both countries, this agreement can help you qualify for this: the Canadian government`s international social security agreements only cover old age security and Canada`s pension benefits. If you have contributed to the PQ, but not to the CPC, please contact the Quebec Pension Plan.
If you did not contribute to the program to qualify for a Bulgarian Old Age Pension under the agreement, Bulgaria takes into account the contribution periods to the Canada pension scheme and the periods of stay in Canada after 18 years as eligible periods under the Bulgarian pension program. In order to determine eligibility for Bulgarian disability benefits, Bulgaria will consider contribution periods to the Canada pension scheme as eligible periods under the Bulgarian Social Security Program. In determining the right to Bulgarian survival benefits, the deceased`s contribution periods to the Canada pension plan and, in some cases, periods of stay in Canada are considered eligible periods under the Bulgarian Social Security program. Canada has signed 57 international social security agreements (or conventions), 54 of which are in force, with the following countries: Canada`s pension programs included in the agreement are the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and the Old Age Security (OAS) program. If you have lived or worked in Bulgaria and Canada, or if you are a survivor of someone who has lived or worked in Bulgaria and Canada, you may be entitled to pensions or benefits from Bulgaria or Canada or both. If you have lived in Canada or contributed to Canada`s pension plan and have contributed to Bulgaria`s pension program, this agreement can help you qualify for the following: If you are not entitled to a Canada Pension Benefit based on your contributions to the CPC, Canada will consider your periods in the Bulgarian pension program as contribution periods to the Canada pension.
